I’ve watched a video that had Jaytech in it recently. He was talking about his way of writing music. He said that he tried to have only 3 ”elements” playign at the same time in his tracks. This is how he defined elements: Drums, Synths, FX/Atmospherics and so on. The human ear can only hear 3 distinctive things at once so what he said made alot of sense.
He said that he liked to have 1 main line and have other elements complement that line. That is a very good idea. Why? Because it makes the track unique, when you hear the vocal line from Roger Sanchez - Another Chance you know what track it is.
Why? Because nothing is stealing the show from that vocal. Analyse every classic track and you’ll hear it. They change the sounds instead of piling them on.
If you want to be better at making electronic music study this track. Notice every detail, its a very complicated tune. If you get nothing out of this track you better try harder.
Soundprank - The Far Side
Making Your Sounds Sound Far Away
We all love a good deep and reverby sound from time to time, eh?
Here’s something I do to make those sounds that seem to come from really far away:
1 - Have the sound in mono
2 - Insert a long mono reverb with some pretty long pre-delay on your sound (on the insert, not on a send)
3 - Setup a stereo reverb on a send
4 - Send your sound to the reverb you just set up
5 - ???
6 - Profit
Extra tip: If you want a sound to sound far away it has to sound blurry, you can’t something that sounds clear and sounds far away at the same time. The clearer the sound, the more it’ll sound in your face.
Extra extra tip: Try adding a modulation effect on your sound (chorus, flanger, phaser etc.) to make the sound more blurry, it works well when trying to achieve those types of sounds. (don’t forget to have your sound in mono!)
Inspiration is something that a lot of us chase and its quite hard to get it at will, if not impossible.
I sometimes try to help my inspiration a bit by feeding it pictures, a picture is worth a 1000 words, but its also worth a 1000 notes!
Sometimes I like to get in front of my computer with my keyboard, set my desktop background to a picture I like and just stare at it while playing my keyboard, if I play enough, the stuff I play on my piano starts fitting with the picture. That is your building block for a track, use it well.
But don’t chase inspiration, don’t expect this to work as a surefire way. The best way to never get inspiration is to chase it relentlessly. Girls like chasing guys, right? Well, I bet inspiration loves chasing you when you’re not creeping it out like a stalker ;)
